Windows Registry- TECH TIP

Post by Marun on Sun Jul 13, 2008 3:18 pm

Hi all..

Just thought of sharing some useful registry stuffs with you pals... below are some

1. Turn off windows animation.

Windows animations stuffs happen when u minimize or maximize windows and it looks good, but if you have good processing power and RAM. To get the most performance out of your system turn off this setting. This can be done through registry as follows:

Go to:
HCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

Change the value of MinAnimate to 0 to disable windows animation. A restart is required for the effect to take place…

2. Load applications faster.

The windows pre-fetcher is meant for loading applications faster by pre-fetching the applications and stores it in cache memory. It is possible to speed-up the application loading by changing the default value of a key in registry…

Go to:
HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManage r\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

The default value of EnablePrefetcher setting is 3. Change it to 5 to make applications load faster… You can try upto 9. . and check if you get improvement.. A reboot is required.

3. Unload unused DLLs.
After an application is closed, XP has a habit of leaving the associated DLL in memory(RAM) this in turn leads to useless consumption of precious memory resource…. Some times it leads to instability. So the DDLs has to be unloaded themselves from memory after the application is done running… Follows the steps:

Go to:
HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\expl orer\AlwaysUnloadDLL

If the DWORD AlwaysUnloadDLL is not present then you will need to create them. Right click on the registry workspace to create… If available change the default value 0 to 1. DLLs will be unloaded automatically….

These tips are applicable for both XP and vista....Hope these helped you pals…

Cheers… Very Happy
