ONBOARD SOUND CARD SUCKS!!

Post by Marun on Mon Jun 16, 2008 12:41 am

As you all know that, there is always a misconception on on-board sound card.

One more thing is onboard audio has made great development in the past few years.

I have been using the onboard audio for couple of months, and finally turned back to worthy and trusty sound card.

There is some technical stuff which makes this onboard a poor one.

1. All the MOBO manufacturers do not contribute on onboard cards. According to them it’s just an Add-on.
What they implement are poor quality capacitors for sound!!!! Generally metal capped capacitors are used for audio devices. They just want to show MOBO a feature rich one so that they can create well defined product.
Especially at Higher bit rates onboard audio fails and even in LF (low frequency) they fail.
In MOBO, LPF (low pass filter) allows only from 40Hz and some times from 60Hz.
Because of this when ever we play music through media player the audio starts distort.

2. During stress test it has been proved that the onboard audio wont fit for higher-end and decent sound.

3. Then comes impedance mismatch. An important technical term!!! The impedance is actually known as kind of attenuation which should be same for output device and input device as well.
The output of audio from MOBO has imp of Ohms which is of IEEE standards. Many products have input impedance of 4 Ohms…
If impedance mismatch occurs then there will be irregularity in current flow between the speaker and onboard device which in turn creates audio distortions. The distortions used to be horrible at peak volumes!!!

4. Next is the number of cords!!! Many MOBO s has only limited number of audio jacks.
For Ex: you have integrated 5.1 onboard audio which is connected to your 5.1 speaker system. It has only 3 jacks. One is for FL, FR. Second is for RL, RR. And the third is for center/subwoofer.
If you need to connect MIC or some other audio input, all you have to do is to unplug any one jack, switch the 5.1 audio to 2.1 Blah... Blah... Blah… It goes like this….
MOBO s is available with multiple jacks but is very costly!!!
Thank god now almost all MOBO s comes with 6 jacks…

5. One important problem is with ASIO.

It is an audio driver protocol (interface between software application and hardware).
Most of the MOBO uses Microsoft’s DirectSound which is commonly used as STEREO input
And output for non professional users. ASIO uses Audiophiles and sound engineers to process
their audio to a higher extent. None of onboard audio uses this ASIO!!! A sad part again!!!
This ASIO also allows the high speed communication with the audio hardware bypassing OS and
Kernels (will explain at the later part in the article).
None of APPLE’ s product uses this Direct Sound technique
Let me explain now, how the onboard sound cards affects the internal performance of CPU.

size=12]We all know that there is a BUS in a MOBO. This BUS will be connected to all the I/O devices with the priority as follows:
1. CPU
2. RAM
3. HDD
4. AGP
5. PCI
6. ONBOARD SOUND CARD!!!!
7. USB and other devices..

Since this soundcard comes last, the priority given by the CPU is less.
I guess all of you would have heard about DMI(Direct Memory Access). It is a concept of\
accessing RAM or HDD. Generally it is not possible to access the RAM or HDD directly thru an
I/O device!!!

The following process will happen to access it:

A trigger will be given from onboard sound card to CPU. CPU gets interrupted and allocates a
bus for data transfer and then audio files will be moved to RAM by processor and then to sound card XRAM!!!! The problem here is XRAM in onboard sound card. It has poor XRAM memory. So, The bus will be busy in transferring the audio files from RAM. This in-turn eats some width of BUS!!! Because of this, HT(hyper transport) bus will not be fully utilized by CPU!! So obviously CPU will be getting instructions and sending data a bit slow!!! That results in not proper usage of CPU clock!!!
But a separate sound card has good XRAM which loads all the songs in a couple of seconds and make the bus free!!!!! That leads to a good stability of CPU.. Since PCI has higher priority the CPU acts soon for PCI card signals.
While opening the media player we can see that the PC hangs for couple of seconds. The main reason behind this is that DMI concept.. Onboard cards take time to make a file play. Its not the case of separate sound card!!

So PALS!! Get a separate sound card and make use of your CPU’s full clock!!!!

Hope this small article helps you in understanding about the onboard sound card…

Any Clarifications are encouraged!!!!
